eBikes and Indiegogo have something in common: They’re both perfect for people who want a big boost to help them go far. Put them together, and you get the most successful campaign in Indiegogo history. With an innovative product and an added boost from Indiegogo’s marketing and campaign strategy, MATE X raised over $17 million, shattering all previous records for Indiegogo campaigns — and, combined with the team’s first crowdfunding campaign, took MATE’s total fundraising to a staggering $24 million.
Julie Kronstrøm Carton and Christian Adel Michael, the brother-sister team behind MATE, come from Copenhagen, where 62% of people bike to work every day. But not every city has Copenhagen’s infrastructure. So to make bike transit more accessible to people around the world, they decided to lower the barrier of entry. Julie and Christian created a prototype for an eBike that was fun, foldable, affordable and, above all, cool.
Their 2016 campaign raised over $6.8 million, making it one of the most successful campaigns ever on Indiegogo. Julie and Christian learned a lot from putting MATE into production and bringing it to market, and they were ready to try their hand at concepting a whole new bike model.
But they needed some guidance to ensure that their second campaign would be just as big as their first.
A strong community is key to crowdfunding success. Luckily, Julie and Christian already had a loyal customer base. When backers from the first campaign received their MATE eBikes, they spread the word to their friends, fostering trust in the product and generating demand.
But it had been two years since their first campaign. To build buzz for their second campaign, they worked with Indiegogo to build a Pre-Launch Page to build momentum in advance. Pre-Launch Pages let crowdfunders build buzz and gather email addresses before their campaign.
Indiegogo partnered with Julie and Christian to maximize awareness among Indiegogo’s early adopters. MATE X’s prominent display on numerous Indiegogo channels brought in $4.3 million.
What’s more, Indiegogo’s team helped Julie and Christian run a Secret Perks program — which raised $1 million all on its own. Secret Perks are a way to reward loyal backers and attract new adopters, since only people who have the unique link are able to see the secret perk.
Finally, Indiegogo’s newly launched countdown feature put a banner right at the top of the campaign page that told backers just how little time they had left to back MATE X. Backers contributed $400,000 in 24 hours after the countdown appeared on MATE X’s page.
